Abstract

This article proposes a systematization and reinterpretation of the functions of economic space in the context of digitalization, institutional transformations, and the increasing complexity of spatial organization. It introduces a revised functional model that reflects contemporary trends in spatial development, including the growing importance of digital infrastructure, network-based interactions, and decentralized coordination. The paper identifies five key functions of economic space – the institutional, the coordinating, the connecting, the integrative, and the productive one – and analyzes their role under current spatial and economic conditions. Particular attention is paid to the dual impact of digitalization: on the one hand, it facilitates new forms of spatial agglomeration; on the other, it reduces dependence on physical infrastructure and enables more balanced development in peripheral regions. The proposed framework provides a conceptual basis for further research and the development of analytical tools for assessing spatial balance and informing territorial policy.
